Jocarta Egyptian Arabian Horses
Vision Quest 2000 A. D.

             Volume 3, Number 1                                           February, 2000

Dear Friends and Relatives,

It has been said that the greatest works in history.., be it literature, art, music, or other expression.., have been borne as a result of the intense feeling of pain, or loss we suffer as survivors of life. It has further been said that while any loss carries great sorrow, perhaps the most difficult of all is the unexpected loss of a child. In the extension of our lives through our dreams and goals, we sometimes relate to and adopt our animals as our "children". We put great care, time, and effort towards their welfare and education. Our hearts fill with pride and joy as we observe each step of achievement that leads to the ultimate goal we desire for everything in life.., success!! But sadly.., it only takes one false move to end it all. Such a moment has occurred at Jocarta.

Just 3 days before her anticipated haul from Missouri to Las Vegas (where I will be playing 'cello for Wayne Newton in his new "Wayne Newton Theater" at the Stardust Hotel), the beautiful dancing filly "Shahirazahd" performed her last equine ballot. Her attempt to avoid an oncoming fence at full speed forced her to accidentally place her legs in an unnatural position... snapping her right fore at the ankle beyond repair. With the witness of 4 helpless people standing there in disbelief at what had happened, I ran to her aid as the others ran to call the vet and appropriate help. As I held her leg up to give her added support, she cradled her neck around me as if to say.., "I think I messed up. I'm sorry!" I knew before the vet arrived that it was a fatal mistake, but how could I tell her? How could it be that it was now I who was asking for forgiveness as I looked into her eyes and stroked her beautiful head? Is it because at such a moment we realize our inadequacy and true lack of power over our will? That no matter how we strive to affect longevity, the fragility of life is ultimately beyond our control.., and oh how we humans strive for control!!!

With the arrival of the vet, her pain was over in a moment, but ours has yet to fade. As I turned to observe her pasture friends, her mother's gaze caught mine. With a silent nicker and the quiver of her nostrils, she seemed to say.., "That hurt, but I understand what you had to do." Perhaps we give too much credence to our interpretation of animal communication and behavior, but you'll never convince me they don't have the mysterious ability to understand without words our deepest thoughts and emotions. From tears or joy to tears of pain, it seems to be inherent in the Arabian Horse to reflect and defend the needs of his guardians, and respond accordingly. Shahirazahd is survived by her mother, Faliha, and her full sister, JC Tashah, at our ranch in Missouri.

Jocarta would like to thank all of our wonderful support-system friends.., especially Cadron Creek, Nandavi, and Lodestone Arabians to name a few.., who have called, sent flowers, cards, and e-mail in their joint expression of sympathy. The loss of any of these rare and beautiful animals entrusted to our care in an effort to preserve their purity & existence is obviously felt by all. It is our responsibility to let you know how much your support means to us in times like these, as well as the good times.

So.., from all of us whose hearts you've touched.., "Farewell sweet dancing girl!"
